THE REMEMBRANCE POEM.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them

From the poem 'For the Fallen' (September 1914) by Laurence Binyon The full version of this poem can be seen on the Poetry Page

About the Branch (Established 1982)

Welsh Regiments: The Royal Welsh Fusiliers The South Wales Borderers The Welsh Regiment The Monmouthshire Regiment

Meetings held every 1st Friday of the month at 7.30 pm at The Fairwater Conservative Club, Ely Road, Cardiff

The Western Front Association was formed to further interest in the period 1914-1918. Its principal objective is to perpetuate the memory, courage and comradeship of those of both sides who served during the Great War. It does not seek to glorify war, it is not a re-enactment society nor is it commercially motivated. It is entirely non-political and application for membership will be welcomed from anyone with like mind.

This website we hope will be of particular interest to all those who wish to learn about the Great War and  the South Wales Branch of the Western Front Association. The Branch is a thriving one with sister branches at Swansea, and Abergavenny.

The South Wales Branch, the oldest of the Welsh branches, was formed at Cardiff with a mere 9 members. Since then meetings have been held at Cardiff on a monthly basis and speakers from all over the UK and locally, including the wealth of knowledge held by branch members, are invited to give interesting talks to the Branch on a wide variety of subjects concerning the Great War. The Branch is also involved with the various Family History Societies' and other events in the locality.

Trip to Mametz Wood, Somme, 6-9 July 2012

The Somme offensive took place during the Battle of Albert from July to November 1916, and one of the landmarks of this series of actions was the Battle of Mametz Wood in July 1916. Just outside the Wood is the well-known Dragon Memorial established in July 1987 to mark this battle and to pay tribute to those men of the 38th (Welsh) Division, who fought, died and became casualties of this important episode. In July 2012 the Branch will be running a trip, July 6th to 8th inclusive, staying at a chosen hotel in the area, to mark its 25th Anniversary. Visits to places of interest around the area will also be a feature of the trip.
More detailed information and an Itinerary will be published as time progresses.
